The first picture below is a pen & ink sketch of a birch that stands beside this wall. The second is a watercolor pencil sketch of the corner where this wall meets the wall along the edge of the field.
You don’t have to look far to figure out where the rocks come from. In fact, you can’t stick a shovel in the ground here without hitting one. Its hard to imagine anyone ever farming here, but they did.
At the base of the hill below the house is a small stream that runs only when it rains. Its waters have revealed the large stones that lurk just below the surface throughout the rest of the area. I drew this picture of the stream channel with pastel.
