I have been taking oil painting lessons since last fall from the talented Christina Mastrangelo. This was my first attempt at applying what I have learned. This was a more methodical and thought-out approach to painting than I had used before. I carefully drew in the scene in burnt umber, and then determined the hue, chroma and value of the various colors and mixed them all on my palette before beginning the painting. I painted the background first, then attacked the foreground, working from the darkest values first, making sure to step back often to judge my progress. The results are below.
We painted from 11:30 to 3. There was a bit of rain when we started, but conditions gradually improved, though the sun never came out. We had a great time and are looking forward to getting out often this year.
